Nhugu Newa, meaning "New Newa" in Nepal Bhasa is a contemporary typeface revival of Ranjana Lipi, the classical script historically used to write the language of the Newar people of the Kathmandu Valley. The project began during my final year as an MFA student at the University of Texas at Arlington, where it became my thesis work. Where existing digital interpretations of Ranjana have largely sought to replicate its calligraphic character, Nhugu Newa takes a different approach: rather than imitating the fluid brush-drawn forms of the traditional script, it reconstructs the underlying structural logic of Ranjana through a strict geometric vocabulary of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal strokes. The result is a typeface that is visually distinct from the calligraphic tradition while remaining rooted in it, legible to someone encountering the script for the first time, yet formally faithful to the proportional rhythms and counterform relationships that define Ranjana as a writing system. Nhugu Newa is designed not as a preservation artifact but as a functional typographic tool — one that makes Ranjana Lipi accessible to the broader Newar community, including the many who carry the culture but have lost the thread to the script.
