These photographs were taken during a summer visit to Bhaktapur, the city I grew up in, and the cultural center of much of my research. Walking through its streets, alleys, temple courtyards, and storefronts with a camera felt different from simply returning home. It was an act of looking deliberately at what I had spent years studying from a distance. The woodcarved windows, the brick-paved lanes, the hand-painted signage, the quiet corners of courtyards I had passed through as a child without stopping to see. These images are not documentary in intent. They are a personal archive, a way of being present in a place that is always with me even when I am not there. They are also the first stage of a longer process, each photograph is source material for a series of illustrations that will translate the visual texture of Bhaktapur's streets into a graphic language rooted in the same cultural landscape that grounds all of my work.
